The Research Center Aggeu Magalhães (CPqAM), Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) unit in Permabuco, develops a research and educational systematic work in several fields of Public Health, aiming the prevention and control of endemic acute and chronic-degenerative diseases in the Northeast. The institution has expanded its activities in the field of development of biopharmaceuticals (vaccines) in diagnostic techniques, and technological development, in order to contribute to the health of the Brazilians.
CPqAM was created in 1950 from the idea of local researchers, who had a dream of founding an institution that researched regional endemic diseases, which affected much of the Northeastern population. In the 1970s, through Federal Government actions, it was integrated to Fiocruz. Its original headquarter was in the borough of Espinheiro, but, since 1986 it has been located in the campus of the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), occupying an area of 15.200 square meters.
Fiocruz Pernambuco, as its known, has, in its research and educational board, Masters and Doctors acting in more than 120 projects. The team acts in six finalistic departments – Entomology, Immunology, Microbiology, Parasitology, Public Health and Virology, Experimental Therapy -, besides the administrative department.
To make their work, the professionals count with a Laboratory of Biosecurity Level 3 (NB 3), used for the Plague and Tuberculosis works, and with a Biotry with a creation, and an experimentation sector, another with Biosecurity Level 3 (NA 3), for wild animals, besides an insectary.
CPqAM also counts with a Technological Platform Nucleus (NPT), composed by the latest equipment, that is enabling the institution to directly relate the fundamental, clinic and strategic research, aiming to intensify exchanges of the produced knowledge in the laboratory to the health services and, from those, to the population. All the research developed in Fiocruz Pernambuco is submitted to the Research Ethic Committee (CEP) of the institution.
In the area of human resources formation, the center has a Public Health graduation program, which offers Ph.D., Academic Master’s Degree, Specialization and Residency courses. The center also offers non regular specialization courses in areas such as management and human resources policy, environmental monitoring, health information, and other themes related to Public Health.
The institution has a specialized library in Biomedical sciences, Public Health and related sciences, whose collection is made by over 5,8 thousand publications, from books, academic papers to specialized magazines, besides more then 700 health videos.
CPqAM is situated at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) campus, at Cidade Universitária, West of Recife (PE), Brazil. It occupies an area of 16.251,52 m², from which 15,200 m² is of constructed area.
